Our volunteers are the heart of our donkey shelter/adoption organization. There are many ways to join us and support our mission. If you live nearby, you may want to train or socialize donkeys or work with us in the day-to-day business such as cleaning paddocks, feeding, grooming, taking donkeys for walks, or escorting potential adopters in to meet and greet our adoptable donkeys or even help in the office. Perhaps you would enjoy preparing for an adoption, community or fundraising event.
We will take your interests and skills and find the perfect way for you to support our work.
If you have special skills in donkey socialization or training, Administration tasks, computer and IT tasks, equine transport, organizing fundraising or training events, grant writing or creating newsletters, Flyers and advertisements, we want to here from you.
Although equine experience is helpful, it's not required. If you are willing to learn, we can train you.

Rudy is the donkey that started it all. He came to us with one back hoof so disfigured, it literally formed itself into a ball and the damage was irreversible. He had severe arthritis in the hock joint of his opposite leg (a result of an injury that was never allowed to heal properly) causing it to lock up in mid-air until he could manage to unlock it. He was in very poor body condition from not being given the appropriate feed to accommodate for his weight loss. He was not up to date on his inoculations, his remaining 3 hooves were overgrown and he could barely walk. It was clear that years of neglect had taken its toll on him and I knew that no one would adopt him in the condition he was in. I refused to turn my back on him when he needed me, so I agreed to take him.
My vet said he doubted Rudy would make it through the winter and suggested euthanasia. I decided to hold off on that, at least for a little while, because he had been cheated out of a good quality of life and I didn't want it to end without him ever having known what it felt like to be loved. Rudy made it through that winter and was with us for a little over a year. He had filled out nicely, gained some strength in his legs and moved about a lot more. He seemed very content with life as it was and he absolutely LOVED all the attention he was getting.
The winter of 2018 proved too much for him and, even though it was just the first snow, I knew he would be in a lot more pain and suffering as the winter progressed. So I called our vet to come and humanely euthanize him that very day and, just as I promised him over a year ago, my husband and I stayed by his side all the way through to the end so that he wouldn't have to die alone.
Because of Rudy, I vowed to become a safe haven for donkeys and end the lack of knowledge and understanding that often leads to abandonment, abuse and neglect.
Our mission is threefold: To provide a safe haven for abandoned, neglected, abused and unwanted donkeys while providing training and rehabilitation to help them find a loving, nurturing, forever home; To provide a safety net where adoptable donkeys whose owners, for whatever reason, find themselves in a position where they can no longer k
Our mission is threefold: To provide a safe haven for abandoned, neglected, abused and unwanted donkeys while providing training and rehabilitation to help them find a loving, nurturing, forever home; To provide a safety net where adoptable donkeys whose owners, for whatever reason, find themselves in a position where they can no longer keep them but want to be assured that their beloved donkeys do not end up in an abusive or neglectful home, at an auction or shipped off to a slaughter house; And to educate the public and donkey owners to form a better understanding of donkeys and their needs.
While in our care, we offer all of our donkeys continued training, food, medical care, love and attention and a meticulous and thorough vetting process to ensure that their new home meets our standards and the potential adopters are suited to provide the best possible care.
Because many abuse, neglect and abandonment cases stem from lack of knowledge and understanding, we offer free education to new donkey owners to reduce the chance of abuse and neglect. We offer free training workshops to volunteer groups and staff working with donkeys in rescues and sanctuaries, as well as accept speaking engagements to talk to the general public about donkeys, their incredible history and the unfortunate situations that face them here at home and in other countries.
BECOME A PART OF OUR FAMILY AND HELP US MAKE MIRACLES HAPPEN
Please consider participating in our $10 TUESDAYS, $5 FRIDAYS OR MONTHLY DONATION programs. Programs like these really make a HUGE difference for our donkeys and their day to day needs. It keeps the cash flowing in on a regular basis. In addition to our hay needs, we have a lot of ongoing expenses such as de-wormers, vaccinations, mineral salt blocks, fly control, vet and farrier service and first aid needs. Then there's the emergency care, equipment repairs and maintenance and basic operating costs in running the administrative end. We continue to work towards erecting more shelters, putting up more fencing and adding more training pens. your tax deductible donations help us achieve those goals so we can continue to take donkeys in that need our help, take care of them and keep them safe until a new loving, caring forever home can be found.
